Police have charged a 14-year-old boy from Brampton following the attempted carjacking and shooting of a rideshare driver in Toronto with a pellet gun.

The Toronto Police Service said officers were called to the area of Kipling Ave. and Rowntree Rd. in Toronto on Sunday for reports of a shooting.

Police say a rideshare driver was dropping off a fare when a boy jumped in the backseat and pointed a gun at the driver while demanding the car keys.

The boy then fired the gun, striking the driver in the head according to police. The driver tried to escape to a nearby building, but investigators say the teen gave chase and caught up to the driver who had fallen to the ground.

The boy then fired several more shots at the driver before fleeing the scene empty-handed, police say. The driver was taken to hospital and police say the man had been shot with pellets from a pellet gun.

A suspect was identified and police say a 14-year-old boy from Brampton was arrested and charged with:

  • Robbery With Offensive Weapon
  • Aggravated Assault
  • Use Imitation Firearm During Commission of Indictable Offence
  • Weapons Dangerous
  • Fail to Comply with Release Order

The teen cannot be named under the Youth Criminal Justice Act. The teen was scheduled to appear in court for a bail hearing on Monday. None of the allegations have been proven in court.
