When it comes to our favourite types of bread, bagels are way up there — not great if you’re on a diet, but if you don’t mind the carbs, the fluffy texture and delicious taste are totally worth the cost of doing business.

Thankfully, Mississauga’s got a lot of great bakeries and cafes with bagels on the menu, so you never have to go too far to satisfy your bagel craving. If you’re in the area of Port Credit (or willing to make the trip), then you’ve gotta try what we believe is currently the best bagel joint in the city: Old Bagel House.

Located on the southeast side of Port Credit, Old Bagel House specializes in Montreal-style bagels. The menu ranges from classic items like a bagel and cream cheese, to more adventurous dishes, including Montreal Chopped Liver.

THE DISHES:

For this review I decided to try Old Bagel House’s take on an iconic sandwich: The BLT (pictured above). I also grabbed a regular bagel with sesame and poppy seeds, an everything bagel with onion flakes and caraway seeds, and a pumpernickel bagel with caraway and flax seeds.

The best came first with the BLT, which tasted amazing. It comes with a generous helping of crispy, perfectly seasoned bacon, and the lettuce and tomato tasted fresh. If you love BLTs but have never had it between two slices of bagel, you owe it to yourself to try it from Old Bagel House.

The regular bagel with sesame and poppy seeds is a great pick if you just want a classic bagel, and it paired great with my favourite bagel topping (cream cheese with light herbs and garlic!). The pumpernickel bagel also had a unique taste I learned to love within a few bites. However, of the three bagels, the everything bagel tasted the best by far. The combination of all the toppings provided a zesty flavour that was pretty much love at first bite.

THE UNIQUE:

Old Bagel House specializes in Montreal-style bagels, which are distinct from other bagels in that they’re sweeter, denser, and baked in a wood-fired oven. The restaurant’s menu has an array of interesting bagels like the Montreal Chopped Liver, the Bagelnator (eggs, ham, bacon and cheese), or if you’re in the mood for something sweeter, a bagel with Nutella.

THE VERDICT:

Old Bagel House is hands down one of the best bagel joints in Mississauga, easily landing onto our Top 5 list. All of the bagels I tried are fantastic, but if you can only get one thing, we definitely recommend trying the BLT.
