Residents will be impacted by LRT excavation work in Mississauga

A number of residents in Mississauga’s south end will have limited access to their homes for the next week as work is completed on part of the $4.6-billion Hazel McCallion light-rail transit line.

Project leaders overseeing construction of the 22-kilometre Mississauga-to-Brampton LRT route said in an online update that front access to a handful of townhouses at Park Street East and Rosewood Avenue, just east of Hurontario Street, will be impacted through next Thursday.

While work is being completed to install, in stages, multi-use duct banks along both Park Street East and Rosewood Avenue, affected residents will have to access their homes from the rear entrance, Metrolinx officials said in their online update.

Metrolinx is the provincial agency in charge of the massive transit project that’s building the LRT line between Port Credit GO station and Brampton.

The duct banks will allow primary power to be connected to the Port Credit station, project leaders noted, adding the work requires excavation adjacent to the townhouse units facing Park Street East.

Duct banks are protective systems for utility wires to keep them safe underground. They’re made from PVC conduits, which are then further protected by being encased in concrete.

Officials said work will take place daily, with the exception of Sunday, from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. through Sept. 18.

“While there are no anticipated driveway impacts, lane restrictions on Park Street East will be implemented and removed daily. Sidewalks will remain closed for the duration of this phase of work,” Metrolinx said.

Temporary traffic restrictions are also in place at a number of other locations along Hurontario Street between Port Credit and Brampton as work progresses on the Hazel McCallion Line.

When completed in 2026, or later, by some unofficial estimates, the Hazel McCallion Line will whisk passengers from Port Credit GO in south Mississauga north into Brampton along Hurontario Street.

It will feature more than 20 stops along the route, including several in Mississauga’s downtown core by Square One. Metrolinx received the go-ahead from the province in February 2024 to extend the LRT line by three or four kilometres into downtown Brampton and reintroduce the “downtown loop” to the City Centre area of Mississauga. The latter component will add several stops to the route.
