Whitby residents looking to stay active and artistic through the cold winter months can begin to register for recreation programs on December 1 at 9 a.m. Registration for pool use through the Aquafit program follows the next day.

There are 580 options for programs, including those that have multiple assigned times through a given week. Examples include art and skill lessons ranging from painting to first aid, intramural sports like badminton or basketball, and games such as bingo.

Anyone wishing to participate can browse and select options from Whitby’s Activity Search. The Wish List feature opened on November 15, so residents can currently choose which programs they’d like to take part in in advance of the registry date.

The opening of registration come on the heels of Whitby lifting capacity limits at community centres. Civic Recreation Complex Health Club raised limits in October and the Anne Ottenbrite Pool at the Iroquois Sports Complex lifted November 1.

The pool at the Civic Recreation Complex is closed until 2022 for $5 million worth of major renovations, funded mostly by Federal and Provincial grants.

Neither centre requires pre-booking any longer. However, attendees must be able to prove they’ve received both vaccine doses. Children under 11, and youth enrolled in sports under age 17 are exempt from the vaccine proof, but may need to have ID.

Medical exemptions are also accepted, but a note from a doctor is required.

The vaccination requirement came into effect in September and applies to the following locations;

  • Iroquois Park Sports Centre
  • Brooklin Community Centre (excluding the Brooklin Branch of the Public Library)
  • McKinney Centre
  • Luther Vipond Arena
  • Whitby Civic Recreation Complex
  • Whitby 55+ Centre
