Region approves additional funding for seniors’ developments, rental units in Oakville

A proposed affordable housing development for seniors in Oakville will cost nearly $2 million more to be completed.

At a meeting held earlier this week, Halton Regional Council approved $1,951,613 in additional funding for the construction of 14-semi-detached bungalows for seniors at 1258 Rebecca St. (images below).

Additional financing was also approved for a 4-storey seniors’ supportive housing building with ground-floor space for a seniors “Hub” at 263 Kerr St. and the development of new assisted rental housing units at 363 Margaret Dr.

“This is a great day,” said Oakville Ward 3 Regional and Town Councillor Janet Haslett-Theall. “Thank you very, very much. We just need to keep going. I’m incredibly heartened by those three reports and the support of all those that can make it happen.”

Located near the Oakville Public Library’s Woodside Branch, the two-acre property on Rebecca St. was acquired by the Region from St. Hilda’s Church in 2013.

A new Paramedic Station was completed in 2020 on the Phase 1 portion of the lands and steps were taken to prepare the remaining lands to permit the development of the assisted living units and detached lots.

The total budget for the 1258 Rebecca St. development has been now revised to $10,394,613.

Regional Council also approved an additional $337,400 (including reimbursements of 5 per cent) as single source award to Colliers Project Leaders Inc. to be the consultant for the construction of the 263 Kerr St. project, including acting as the owner’s advisor and payment certifier.

Demolition of the former Oakville Seniors’ Centre at the site has been completed. The project will cost close to $46M and is expected to be completed within 18 months (Nov. 14, 2024).

The budget for the Margaret Dr. redevelopment will be increased by $600,000 from the current budget of $400,000 to 1 million.

The development is part of Halton Region’s plan to create new assisted rental housing units.
