A new subsidy will make it easier for more vulnerable Oshawa residents to utilize day programs.
Recently, the OSCC 55+ (or Oshawa Senior Community Centres) announced that, with support from Solara Health Partners, it has launched a new subsidy program that will allow seniors and their families to access adult day programs (including transportation) at a reduced cost.
On its website, the OSCC 55+ says its adult day programs, which can include exercise, mental stimulation, music, games and special events, provide a “safe and supportive” environment for older adults with dementia, Alzheimer’s disease, stroke, or other chronic conditions.
“Participants benefit from meaningful activities, exercise, and social interaction, supported by trained and compassionate staff. At the same time, caregivers gain valuable respite knowing their loved one is well cared for,” the website reads.
The OSCC 55+ said the subsidy will help offset both program and transportation costs, reducing financial barriers and enabling more seniors to participate more frequently. This, the organization said, will also give caregivers additional respite.
For the Links2Wellbeing: Social Prescribing for Older Adults program, potentially eligible applicants include people with symptoms related to loneliness, social isolation, caregiver fatigue, loss of a spouse, or being new to the community. A referral from a health care provider is required and the subsidy could cover up to 100 per cent of membership fees and two programs, per person, per quarter (session).
To access a subsidy for OSCC55+ leisure programs, which include continuing education programs and special events, applicants must have a total household income not exceeding the low-income cut-offs threshold (proof is required).
The subsidy could cover up to 100 percent of membership fees and one program per person per quarter (session).
To qualify for a subsidy for access to community support services, including the day programs, transportation and footcare services, the applicant must have a total family income not exceeding 25 per cent above the low-income cut-offs threshold.
The subsidy may cover up to 100 per cent of membership fees (if applicable) and one program or service per person per quarter.
