RECALLS: Children’s bathrobes, cradles, toys, speakers, fish and burgers recalled in Ontario

Recalls this week in Ontario, salmon, bathrobes, burgers, gym equipment, speakers, cradles.

Another week and another set of recalls in Ontario.

Residents are advised to check their homes for everyday household products and food items that may pose health risks to themselves and their children which include falls, burns, entrapment, and allergic reactions.

Here’s what’s being recalled for the week of April 14 to April 21.


Turquaz Linen 100% Turkish Cotton Hooded Terry Kids Bathrobes

The bathrobes are sold in various colours and sizes. The product code can be found on the inner side of the garment label.

The following products are part of the recall:

  • 2040LAV—Lavender, Sizes: Small to XL
  • 2040PNK—PINK, Sizes: Small to XL
  • 2040RBL—Royal Blue, Sizes: Small to XL
  • 2040TUR—Turquoise Blue, Sizes: Small to XL
  • 2040WHT—White, Sizes: Small to XL

Health Canada’s tests have found that children’s sleepwear products fail to meet the required flammability standards, increasing the risk of severe burns.

Additionally, loose-fitting sleepwear can more easily ignite from household sources like stove elements and candles than tight-fitting garments.

The company reported that 810 units of the affected products were sold in Canada from May 2015 to February 2024.

Risks: Flammable and burn hazards.

What you should do: Stop using the recalled bathrobes and destroy them.

As of March 28, 2024, the company has not received any reports of incidents or injuries in Canada.


Kinderfeets Hanging Gym Products

The following Kinderfeet hanging gym products are part of the recall:

  • Kinderfeets Baby Swing—UPC: 850007036539
  • Kinderfeets Child’s Swing—UPC:850007036546
  • Kinderfeets Climbing Ladder—UPC:850007036522
  • Kinderfeets Trapeze with Rings—UPC:850007036515

The issue with the product is the rope may break unexpectedly while in use.

The company reported that approximately 400 units of the affected products were sold in Canada between August 2023 to March 2024.

Risks: Poses fall hazard.

What you should do: Discontinue using the recalled hanging gym products and call Kinderfeets LLC to receive a pre-paid return label. After returning the product to the importer, customers can request a full refund from the original place of purchase.

As of March 28, 2024, the company has received three reports of the rope breaking in Canada, and one report of a skinned knee.


Yoto Mini Speaker

This portable screen-free speaker is for children ages three to twelve.

It uses Yoto cards to play audiobooks, music, radio, and podcasts.

The speaker, identifiable by its pale gray colour with orange controls and a pixel display, includes the model name Yoto Mini with the SKU PRPLXX00860, and a serial number on its base.

The Yoto Mini, which is sold with a charging cable but no adaptor, has been recalled for safety concerns.

The issue is the speaker’s lithium-ion battery which can overheat and catch fire.

The company reported that 19,721 units of the affected product were sold in Canada, and 251,165 were sold in the United States between November 2021 to November 2023.

Risks: Potential burn and fire hazard.

What you should do: Stop using the recalled speaker and contact the Yoto company to receive a free replacement smart charging cable.

As of April 1, 2024, the company has received no reports of incidents or injuries in Canada.  In the United States, the company has received six reports of battery overheating or melting with no reported injuries.


Unilove Hug Me Plus 2-in-1 Bedside Sleeper and Portable Cradle

The recall includes Unilove 2-in-1 cradles available in:

  • grey (UPC 872106002420)
  • pink (UPC 872106002413)

The cradle features include mesh panels, telescoping feet with wheel locks, and seven height adjustment levels.

Health Canada’s evaluations have found that cradles fail to comply with national Cribs, Cradles and Bassinets Regulations due to their inclined sleep surfaces, which exceed a 7-degree angle.

Additionally, Health Canada advises parents and caregivers that the safest sleep setting for a baby is on their back on a firm, flat surface designed for sleeping.

The company reported that 433 units of the affected products were sold in Canada between June 2022 to April 2024.

Risks: Poses entrapment and suffocation hazards to children.

What you should do: Stop using the recalled product and contact Voltz Toys for a refund.

As of April 8, 2024, the company has received no reports of incidents or injuries in Canada.


Mowi brand Norwegian Atlantic Salmon – Cold Smoked

The following batches are part of the recall:

  • Norwegian Atlantic Salmon—Cold-smoked in the 113-gram size, UPC: 8 19693 02546 3. All units sold from March 27, 2024, up to and including April 10, 2024.

The fish contains a microbial contamination called Clostridium Botulinum.

Food tainted with Clostridium Botulinum toxin may not exhibit spoilage signs but can still cause illness. Symptoms in adults include facial paralysis, unresponsive pupils, difficulty swallowing, drooping eyelids, blurred or double vision, and speech difficulties including slurred speech and altered voice. Children may experience difficulty swallowing, slurred speech, weakness, and paralysis. Botulism doesn’t induce fever, but severe cases can be fatal.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) is currently undertaking a food safety investigation, with the potential for additional product recalls.

According to Health Canada, the CFIA ensures that the industry actively removes recalled products from the marketplace.

Risks: Poses health hazard if consumed.

What you should do: Individuals who suspect illness from consuming the product should contact their healthcare provider. They should also dispose of or return the items to the place of purchase.

As of April 14, 2024, no illnesses have been reported associated with the consumption of this product.


Kool Kitchen brand Veggie Burgers

The following burger batches are part of the recall:

  • Kool Kitchen Veggie Burgers in the 476 gram size. UPC: 651539200944. All codes where gluten is not listed on the label.

The burgers are being recalled from the marketplace because they contain gluten, which is not declared on the label.

Risks: Health hazard.

What you should do: Individuals with allergies or sensitivities should refrain from consuming the recalled burgers, as they could induce a severe or life-threatening reaction.

A consumer complaint triggered the recall with one reported reaction after eating the burger.
