Mushrooms, pasta, and toys recalled in Mississauga and Brampton due to health risks

Health Canada has issued advisories and recalled multiple products this week (May 10 to 16) due to potential health and safety risks.

Residents are advised to check if they have these products at home and avoid using or consuming them out of caution.

The following products are affected:


Toysmith Toy Science – Magnets 8 Piece Set

Type: Recall

Risk: Health Canada has determined that the magnets do not meet the magnetic force requirements of the Toys Regulations and pose an ingestion hazard. Health Canada says the results of swallowing small powerful magnets can be very serious and life-threatening.

Product info: UPC: 085761073647, Item number: 7364. Production date codes: 12/18/120, 04/19/120, 05/19/120, 06/19/120 & 07/19/120.

What you should do: Immediately take the recalled toy magnet set away from children and return to place of purchase for a full refund.


Farm Boy The Bake Shop brand Tres Leches Cake

Type: Recall 

Risk: Product contains wheat which is not declared on the label. People who have an allergy to wheat, or have celiac disease or other gluten-related disorders should avoid eating it.

Product info: Size: 450 g, UPC: 8 08912 02284 0, Best Before: MA12.

What you should do: Recalled products should be thrown out or returned to the store where they were purchased.


Wild Republic Slap Watches

Type: Recall

Risk: The coin cell battery inside the slap watches can fall out, posing battery ingestion and choking hazards.

Product info: Numerous watches affected.

What you should do: Residents should immediately stop using this product and contact K&M Toys Canada Co. for a full refund.


Backyard Discovery Big Brutus, Little Brutus and Mini Brutus Metal A-Frame Swing Sets

Type: Recall

Risk: The attachment of the swing hanger may fail, creating an injury hazard.

Product info: Manufacture codes: 03/2019-O, 02/2020-T, 03/2020-T, 04/2020-T, 05/2020-O, 07/2020-O.

What you should do: Residents should immediately stop using the equipment and contact the company for a free repair kit.


Nexans Canada Inc. 4C12(1) AC90 12-gauge electrical cable

Type: Recall

Risk: The recalled product contains 14-gauge electrical conductors in the cable instead of 12-gauge (as labelled) and running a current suitable for a size 12-gauge conductor through a size 14-gauge conductor may cause overheating, posing a fire hazard.

Product info: Nexans 14-gauge electrical cable labelled as “4C12(1) AC90 CU ST1 ZERO HAL” sold in 75 metre spools. Product number 633735, UPC 62208933735.

What you should do: If the product has been installed, a qualified electrician must confirm that the installed cable meets the appropriate electrical loading of the circuit. The electrician must change the circuit electrical protection for a 14awg product, as required by the Canadian Electrical Code. Any unused product can be returned to Nexans Canada Inc. for a full refund.


Baman brand Sour Radish Vermicelli

Type: Recall

Risk: Presence of mould.

Product info: Size: 3 x 200 g, Code on product: 20201104/TT/3, UPS: 6 970565 870773.

What you should do: Recalled products should be thrown out or returned to the store where they were purchased.


Brookstone Folding Step Stools

Type: Recall

Risk: The folding step stools may crack, break, or collapse unexpectedly when in use, posing a fall hazard. As of May 10, 2021, the company has received 6 reports of incidents with 4 resulting in injuries in Canada.

Product info: Sold in a set of 2, with a UPC of 84362013246. The step stool is made of plastic and has grey legs with blue top.

What you should do: Residents should stop using the affected product and return the product to a Costco Wholesale Canada Ltd. location for a refund.


Enoki Mushrooms

Type: Advisory

Risk: Potential presence of Listeria monocytogenes. Food contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes may not look or smell spoiled but can still make you sick. Symptoms can include vomiting, nausea, persistent fever, muscle aches, severe headache and neck stiffness.

Product info: Brand: None (Packed for Metro Brands), Size: 99 g, Codes: All units sold up to and including May 14, 2021.

What you should do: Check to see if you have the affected product in your home and do not consume it. If you think you became sick from consuming a food product, call your doctor.


Health Canada is also reminding Canadians to check for a recognized Canadian certification mark on the product when purchasing smoke or carbon monoxide (CO) alarms online or in-store. Products that do not have a recognized Canadian certification mark may not meet Canadian performance standards and could fail or operate incorrectly, potentially posing a risk in the event of a fire or CO incident.
