RECALL: Food recalled across Canada due to potential health risk

A nationwide food recall has been issued due to the risk of histamine-related illness, prompting warnings from the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA).

The recall affects a fish product distributed in Ontario, Quebec, Alberta, British Columbia, Nova Scotia, Saskatchewan, and possibly other provinces and territories. The CFIA confirmed that reactions have been reported in connection with the affected item.

The recall, announced on July 3, 2025, is classified as a Class 2 recall, which indicates a moderate health risk. High levels of histamine in certain fish can lead to a type of foodborne illness known as scombroid poisoning.

What is histamine-related illness?
Histamine-related illness occurs when certain types of fish, such as tuna, mackerel, and anchovies, are not properly refrigerated and begin to produce high levels of histamine. This chemical compound can cause allergic-like reactions.

Symptoms typically begin within minutes to a few hours after consumption and may include:

• Flushed skin
• Headaches
• Nausea or vomiting
• Abdominal cramps
• Rash or hives
• Heart palpitations

Although often mild and temporary, symptoms can be more severe in some cases and may require medical attention. Cooking or freezing does not destroy histamine, which makes proper food storage especially important.
