Another food item is being recalled due to possible listeria contamination in Ontario.
A Canadian back bacon recall follows the Great Value and Silk plant-based milks recalls for listeria. The milk contamination is linked to three deaths and Public Health Agency of Canada said there were 20 confirmed cases of people sickened by listeriosis — the illness caused by the Listeria bacteria — in four provinces.
This latest recall is for three European Butcher products — Canadian back bacon half, chunks and sliced, a notice from the Canadian Food Inspection Agency says.
Pavao Meats & Deli Ltd. and European Butcher are recalling the products after Canadian Food Inspection Agency test results.
There have been no reported illnesses associated with the consumption of these products.
The products were distributed in Ontario and are being recalled from the marketplace due to possible listeria monocytogenes contamination, the notice says.
Food contaminated with listeria may not look or smell spoiled but can still make you sick.
Symptoms can include vomiting, nausea, persistent fever, muscle aches, severe headache and neck stiffness. Pregnant women, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems are particularly at risk.
Although infected pregnant women may experience only mild, flu-like symptoms, the infection can lead to premature delivery, infection of the newborn or even stillbirth. In severe cases of illness, people may die.
Anyone who has the recalled products should throw them out or return them. The affected products have product codes starting with 0 215096, 0 200386 and 0 200029. The are batch number 177.
If you think you became sick from eating a recalled product, contact your healthcare provider, Health Canada advises.
