Rain washes out outdoor sports in Burlington

Heavy rain has forced the cancellation of several outdoor sporting events in Burlington.

Late this afternoon the City of Burlington sent out a message that “due to wet, unplayable conditions” all grass multi-use fields and baseball diamonds are closed today (June 12).

Artificial turf fields remain open.

Earlier in the day Environment Canada issued a weather alert for Burlington and much of Halton Region concerning heavy rainfall today and possibly through the next several days.

As well as making some playing surfaces unusable, Conservation Halton has also warned that the consistent rainfall could lead to increased water levels and rapidly flowing water along local rivers, brooks, streams and any other watercourses.

While widespread flooding is not anticipated, fast-flowing water and flooding of low-lying areas and natural floodplains may be expected.

“Conservation Halton is asking all residents and children to keep a safe distance from all watercourses and structures such as bridges, culverts and dams,” read the statement. “Elevated water levels, fast-flowing water, and slippery conditions along stream banks continue to make these locations extremely dangerous.  Please alert children in your care of these imminent dangers.

The Watershed Condition Statement will be in effect through Tuesday, June 13.
