A simple traffic stop for a suspended licence turned into far more for a Niagara-on-the-Lake man who was also allegedly caught with nearly 17 grams of crystal meth.

Niagara Police says that the driver was in the area of Hartzel Rd near Walnut St in St. Catharines on Jan. 30 at 8:50 pm when a patrol officer ran his plates through their cruiser’s onboard Automated Licence Plate Recognition.

The onboard program said the owner of the car had a suspended licence, so he was stopped and charged.

However, police say a subsequent search of the vehicle turned up 16.9 grams of crystal meth.

Kevin Lee Bentum, 50, of Niagara-on-the-Lake, was charged with possession of illegal drugs and driving under suspension.

He was released on a court appearance notice and is scheduled to appear again on Feb. 23.
