Province reporting 2,005 new cases of COVID-19 and 18 deaths

Today (Sunday, December 27) the province is reporting 2,005 new cases of COVID-19 and 18 deaths linked to the virus.
Locally, there are 572 new cases in Toronto, 331 in Peel, 207 in York Region, and 140 in Windsor-Essex County.
Health Minister Christine Elliott says the number of tests completed from December 24 to 26 have been delayed and will be made available shortly on the province’s website.
The province-wide lockdown went into effect on Saturday, December 26, with all Ontario residents advised to stay home as much as possible and limit trips outside of home to necessities.
On December 26, the province reported that a Durham couple was Ontario’s first two confirmed cases of a COVID-19 variant originally identified in the UK.
The variant is believed to be more contagious, but the province says there is no evidence that it is more likely to cause severe illness and no evidence that the two Health Canada-approved vaccines will be any less effective against it.

“This further reinforces the need for Ontarians to stay home as much as possible and continue to follow all public health advice, including the provincewide shutdown measures beginning today,” said Dr. Barbara Yaffe, Ontario’s Associate Chief Medical Officer of Health.
