Province accelerates date when residents of Mississauga and Brampton can get second COVID-19 vaccination

The Province has announced it is accelerating the timeframe for which residents of certain parts of Ontario, including Halton and Peel, can get their second dose of a COVID-19 vaccine.

As of June 14, those who received their first dose of an mRNA vaccine between April 19 and May 9 in areas associated with the Delta variant of the virus—which includes Halton Region, Peel Region, Porcupine, Toronto, Waterloo, Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph, and York Region—as well as residents over the age of 50, and those with high-risk health concerns can book their second dose.

The date has been moved up from July 19 due to concerns regarding the spread of the Delta variant, which is projected to become the dominant strain of the virus in the coming weeks.

Additionally, those who received their first dose between May 10 and May 30 will be eligible to receive their second dose as of August 2, while those who received their first dose May 31 or later will be eligible for their second starting August 9.

For those who received a first dose of the AstraZeneca vaccine, the latest data indicates the vaccine is most effective when doses are spaced out between 12 weeks, so they may have to wait a little longer for their second, but they have the choice to receive another AstraZeneca dose, or an mRNA vaccine—either Pfizer or Moderna.

Those who wish to receive a second AstraZeneca vaccine can begin scheduling an appointment for their second dose as of June 4 at a participating pharmacy.

Additionally, due to the similarities between the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines, the National Advisory Committee on Immunization (NACI) has stated those who received either vaccine can receive the other if the one they received originally is unavailable.

As of June 9, Pfizer’s vaccine is approved for everyone over the age of 11, while Moderna’s is approved for everyone over the age of 17—the NACI no longer recommends anyone get a first dose of the AstraZeneca vaccine, but second doses are approved for those over the age of 39.
