Palestine Palestinian Burlington Hamilton protest

UPDATE: Protesters have left the area and the bridge is now open again to traffic as of 12:15 p.m. June 7

Protesters have occupied the Burlington Canal Lift Bridge, shutting down traffic in the area.

According to initial reports, the protestors are on the bridge today (June 7) to show support for Palestine during the current conflict in the Middle East.

Police are on the scene monitoring the demonstration and assisting with diverting traffic through the area.

The bridge, which carries Eastport Drive traffic across Hamilton Harbour, has been undergoing renovations for over a year but recently reopened with lane restrictions for vehicles.

There is no indication of how long the protesters plan to keep the bridge closed.

Police have not said if they plan to make arrests or remove the protesters.
