Protest fills Union Station in Toronto with smoke; Mississauga man one of 2 charged

A Mississauga man is one of two people charged after police say a pair of protesters set off a smoke canister inside Union Station in Toronto in the early hours of the new year.

Toronto Police said protesters were demonstrating inside the busy station when a smoke canister was discharged at around 1:10 a.m. on Jan. 1.

“Union Station started to fill with smoke, causing safety concerns,” police said in a news release.

This past Friday, two men were arrested by police and charged.

Ahmad Hassan Hajahmad, 31, of Mississauga, and Nabil Suheil Jalbout, 24, of Burlington, are each charged with mischief interfere with the lawful use of property.

They’re both scheduled to appear in Toronto court on Feb. 20.
