While Gord's Place at 88 James St. is only three stories high, it will be replaced by a 30-story condo building, the largest structure in downtown St. Catharines.

While work is well underway for an 18-storey rental unit building in St. Catharines between Garden Park and Carlisle St., construction has yet to start on what will be downtown’s highest building – the 30-storey condo building at 88 James St.

Once work starts on the James St. condos, the builders, Elite Development, estimate it will take roughly three years from ground-breaking before residents can move into what will be St. Catharines’ fanciest new digs.

The Burlington developer say the 276 unit building being constructed on the present Gord’s Place lot will be suites  from 498 square feet up to 777 square feet in size. (An average two-bedroom apartment is 775 square feel in size.)

However, there will also be 6,500 square feet of indoor amenity space, featuring a state-of-the-art fitness facility, yoga room, connectivity lounge, and a party room with a 10,000 square foot rooftop, outdoor space.

Two years ago when the development, which will be next to the St. Catharines Downtown Library, was first being discussed Kim Kopyl, Vice-President of sales and marketing for Elite Developments said their target buyers were young families, young professionals and empty nesters.

“We are inspired about this unique parcel of land, and about the beautiful City of St. Catharine’s. We look forward to supporting the continued economic growth, renewal, and urban revitalization of downtown.” said Kopyl at that time.

Once completed, the 30-storey condo building at 88 James St. will be the tallest building in downtown St. Catharines by a large margin. Once ground is broken, it will take three years to complete.
