A Coptic monastery with ties to Mississauga could be the first of its kind in Western Canada.

The St. George and St. Paul The Anchorite Monastery is planned near Red Deer, Alberta and would be part of the Coptic Diocese of Mississauga, Vancouver and Western Canada.

Initial plans call for the building of a chapel with accommodation for visitors and those who are there for religious study. A large part of the 124-acre property will be used for agricultural purposes.

A posting on the monastery’s website says it will bring “the authentic monastic life that was established by St. Anthony The Great in Egypt to Western Canada” as well as provide spiritual and social services to Coptic and Christian communities of Western Canada and other parts of the country.

Mississauga is home to a large population of Copts who are centred at the Canadian Coptic Centre and Church of the Virgin Mary and St. Athanasius on Eglinton Ave. W.
