Brampton is about to become the centre of the cricket world as professional players from around the globe descend on the city for the National Cricket League (NCL) 20 Canada tournament.

The tournament gets underway Thursday, July 16, and runs until Aug. 1, bringing six franchise teams, 24 matches and a mix of international cricket stars and Canadian talent to three Brampton venues.

The event will feature the hometown Brampton Blazers and will be played at the Earnscliffe Park Cricket Facility, Creditview Sandalwood Park and Turner Fenton Secondary School.

City officials and NCL organizers say the tournament is another major milestone in Brampton’s push to establish itself as Canada’s cricket capital and a destination for the sport in North America.

“NCL, in its short history, has created new standards in cricket. We are proud to reintroduce professional cricket to the City of Brampton,” NCL chairman Arun Agarwal said when the tournament was announced.

“This season promises to be the largest and most dynamic yet, with strong collaboration from the City of Brampton. We are equally committed to giving back to this vibrant city and the Province of Ontario by actively engaging local vendors, hotels and restaurants, and contributing to meaningful economic growth within the community.”

The tournament is expected to bring more than just cricket action to Brampton, with officials pointing to the potential economic impact on local businesses, including restaurants, hotels and vendors.

The arrival of the NCL tournament comes as Brampton continues investing heavily in cricket infrastructure.

The city has spent approximately $10 million over the past two years improving cricket facilities, including field upgrades, lighting enhancements and expanded amenities.

Brampton now has 23 cricket fields, with more planned as demand for the sport continues to grow.

One of the city’s most significant projects is the Earnscliffe Park Cricket Facility, which will serve as Brampton’s first year-round cricket venue. Improvements have also been made at Creditview Sandalwood Park, while Turner Fenton Secondary School features a joint-use cricket pitch being used during the tournament.

A larger multi-purpose cricket facility has also been proposed as part of the City Lands development.

According to the city, more than 115 organizations currently use Brampton’s cricket facilities, generating more than 18,000 hours of field bookings each year.

The growth of the sport is also being supported at the grassroots level through Brampton’s Youth Cricket League, sponsored by Centaur Products Inc.

The program introduces young players to cricket while providing structured opportunities to develop their skills. Youth leagues include an under-nine division running Mondays through Aug. 31 and an under-12 division operating Tuesdays through Sept. 1 at Blue Oak Park.

With professional competition, international talent and growing community participation, city officials say the NCL 20 Canada tournament is another step toward making Brampton a recognized cricket destination.
