Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is speaking at a Liberal Party fundraising event tonight (Aug. 30), which has some people speculating the by-election date for Mississauga-Lakeshore will be set tonight.

The fundraising event is listed as “An Evening with Justin Trudeau” in Mississauga on Aug. 30, according to the Liberal Party website. The location and time of the fundraiser are not listed.

Trudeau, along with Mississauga Centre MP Omar Alghabra and MP for Eglinton-Lawrence Marco Mendicino, are featured guests for the event.

A Liberal Party spokesperson tells inSauga that Mississauga-Erin Mills MP Iqra Khalid is hosting the fundraiser and has invited Liberal supporters from across Mississauga. The Liberal Party will file a full list of attendees with Elections Canada.

The Prime Minister is also in Toronto meeting with Premier Doug Ford at 4 p.m., according to his itinerary for Aug. 30.

News of the event has some speculating the date for Mississauga-Lakeshore by-election will be set.

“PM Justin Trudeau is reportedly launching the Mississauga-Lakeshore By-election tomorrow,” one person tweeted.

But there is no official word that the by-election date will be set tonight. The Liberal Party could not say, and the Prime Minister’s office did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The Mississauga-Lakeshore seat is vacant after Liberal MP Sven Spengemann stepped down to take a position with the United Nations in May.

Time is running out to call a by-election. The by-election must be announced sometime between June 10 and Nov. 26, according to Elections Canada.
