Brampton will be one of the first beneficiaries of a Canadian government initiative to boost infrastructure across the country.
Prime Minister Mark Carney was in Brampton this morning (April 7) to further explain how the $51 billion Build Communities Strong Fund will be used across Canada and to specifically assist in the construction of a state-of-the-art community centre in the southwest part of the city.
Carney said the fund will support the Embleton Community Centre through a $64 million contribution to assist with construction. The City of Brampton has already committed $148 million to the project.
“This is hugely exciting,” said the prime minister. “It’s a 175,000 sq-ft space with competitive and recreational pools, a gymnasium, a fitness centre, child care services, an ice skating pavilion, courts for tennis and pickleball, and nets for cricket. It will be a space where families gather, where kids learn to swim, where athletes train, and where this great community grows.
Carney said the building of the community centre is happening because of the strong partnership between the federal government, the private sector and the City of Brampton.
The Embleton Community Centre and Park grounds are one of the major community projects undertaken in Brampton.
The project is in its infancy and still in the design and approval stage, with construction expected to begin later this year and a completion goal set for 2028.
When complete, Embleton is expected to be a multi-use, multi-seasonal facility designed for residents of all ages and abilities and become southwest Brampton’s hub for recreation programs and lessons, aquatic and fitness opportunities, and gathering and community connection. It will also include a new library branch with the potential to include a future child care facility.
“The Embleton Community Centre is a promise to every family in southwest Brampton that their city sees them, hears them, and is investing in them. A $64 million federal commitment through the Build Communities Strong Fund, combined with the $148 million our council has already approved, means we are building something truly extraordinary that will serve generations to come,” said Mayor Patrick Brown.
Carney went on to say the Build Communities Strong Fund will speed up the construction of hospitals, recreation centres, universities and colleges, and other infrastructure projects that serve Canadian communities.
Embleton is the first of a series of 13 projects under the Build Communities Strong Fund across the country, Carney said, with $300 million in federal funding and more to come in the weeks ahead.
