A new Pride crosswalk was unveiled on Friday right beside Niagara Regional Headquarters.

As Pride Month celebrations continue across Niagara Region, the regional headquarters unveiled a special surprise late last week – a brand new Pride crosswalk leading towards the building.

Located at the intersection of Sir Isaac Brock Way and Schmon Parkway, the region said, “This Pride crosswalk is a way of celebrating, supporting, and creating awareness of the 2SLGBTQQIA+ community in Niagara and beyond.”

The design of the Pride crosswalk was developed by Brock University Human Rights and Equity office and was selected in collaboration with the local 2SLGBTQQIA+ communities.

“The installation of this crosswalk is a demonstration of our commitment to build an inclusive community where everyone feels welcome. On behalf of Regional council, I want to thank our partners at Brock University for helping design this crosswalk and for the members of the 2SLGBTQQIA+ community for sharing their feedback on this initiative,” said Regional Chair Jim Bradley.

“We will continue promote, educate and drive awareness of gender and sexually diverse individuals in our community as part of our efforts to build the most inclusive community possible.”

Since the Regional Headquarters is located in Thorold, Mayor Terry Ugulini said his city was proud of the initiative and wanted to thank all the parties involved in making this happen.

“The City of Thorold is committed to supporting its 2SLGBTQQIA+ community and is dedicated to being a responsive city that respects the rights, differences, and dignity of all its people,” said Ugulini. “This new crosswalk shows our commitment to foster a community where every person feels like they belong.”

Brock University Interim President Lynn Wells, who oversees campuses in both St. Catharines and Thorold, called it a “wonderful initiative.”

Wells said, “We’re very glad to see the crosswalk painted so close to campus. Brock is strongly committed to building a more equitable and inclusive community, and the painting of this nearby crosswalk will serve as a constant and visible reminder that all are welcome in Niagara.”
