Provincial police are seeking witnesses and dashcam footage as they continue to investigate the fatal stabbing of an Orillia man that led to a second-degree murder charge against a Brampton resident.
The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is asking anyone who was in or near Scout Valley Trail on the evening of June 2 to come forward with information that could assist investigators.
Police say 47-year-old Justin Van Allen of Orillia died after he was stabbed while walking his dogs along the trail at about 7 p.m.
Officers were called to the area after reports of a man in distress suffering from serious injuries. Van Allen was later pronounced dead.
A day after the incident, police announced the arrest of 33-year-old Devon Alamina of Brampton, who has been charged with second-degree murder.
Despite the arrest, investigators say the case remains active and are appealing for witnesses and dashcam footage from anyone who may have been in the area around the time of the attack.
Van Allen is being remembered as a devoted husband and father of five children.
The latest appeal comes as additional details have emerged about the accused. Court records show Alamina was convicted in February and sentenced to 60 days in custody for assault with a weapon and failing to comply with a probation order stemming from an incident in Caledon in June 2025.
The Orillia OPP Crime Unit is continuing the investigation under the direction of the OPP Criminal Investigation Branch, with assistance from the Office of the Chief Coroner, the Ontario Forensic Pathology Service and OPP Forensic Identification Services.
Police have not released a motive and have not disclosed whether Van Allen and Alamina knew one another.
Anyone with information or dashcam footage is asked to contact the Orillia OPP at 1-888-310-1122 and reference incident number E260761232. Anonymous tips can also be submitted through Crime Stoppers.
The charge against Alamina has not been proven in court.
