Riders in Mississauga, Brampton, Hamilton and beyond have a new way to pay for local trips and GO Transit as the province has just opened debit card tap payments for fares.

Associate Minister of Transportation Stan Cho made the announcement in Brampton on Tuesday (May 2) that the province has launched a debit payment program on transit systems in Ontario including GO Transit.

Riders can simply tap their debit card on any PRESTO machine on participating transit lines to pay for fares, or use their smartphone or smartwatch to pay.

Debit tap payments are now being accepted on the following transit systems:

  • GO Transit
  • MiWay in Mississauga
  • Brampton Transit
  • UP Express
  • Burlington Transit
  • Durham Region Transit
  • Hamilton Street Railway
  • Oakville Transit
  • York Region

Riders can also use debit payment on paratransit services in Burlington, Durham Region, Hamilton, York Region, Oakville, and Ottawa. Transit users should check the price and fare structure before they tap, as rate may differ between transit agencies and a discount may apply when using a PRESTO card, the province said in a release.

Cho said the new tap option “is just one more way our government is making the transit experience easier for Ontarians.” The province is also working with the Toronto Transit Commission to introduce both credit and debit payment options for Toronto transit riders this summer.

Ontario began introducing more payment options in 2021 when it launched PRESTO payment by credit and debit card as a pilot on UP Express before expanding credit card payments to the entire GO Transit network, as well as the Brampton, Mississauga and Oakville transit systems.

The province said that PRESTO has recorded a million card taps on its devices since the launch of credit card payments in August 2022.
