Mississauga power outage leaves nearly 4,000 homes, businesses in the dark

A live hydro wire has been downed on the East Mountain in Hamilton, causing a power outage and leading police to shoo away rush-hour motorists.

Hamilton Police say that the westbound lanes of the Upper Red Hill Valley Parkway were blocked from Rymal Rd. to Pritchard Rd. are blocked. Firefighting crews are on the scene.

Alectra Utilities is also reporting an outage that is affecting 237 homes and businesses, and is expected to last until about 7:30 p.m. The outage is in the area in the Upper Ottawa St. to Pritchard Rd. and Rymal Rd. E. to Stone Church Rd. E. area.

“Please avoid the area in your travels,” HPS said in a Twitter post.

Around 4:25 p.m., the police added that some traffic lights are out and that there are traffic delays, so the area should be avoided if that is possible. Westbound lanes on Rymal Rd. E. were also closed, but reopened around 4:15 p.m.

The affected area, per a map at horizonutilities.com, includes the southern portion of Mohawk Sports Park. The sprawling sports complex includes Bernie Arbour Stadium, where the Hamilton Cardinals have a 7:35 p.m. Intercounty Baseball League playoff game on Friday night. The ballpark is the second northern-most sports field at the complex.

Alectra’s progress with restoring service, and projections, can be followed at horizonutilities.com.
