Update 7:30 p.m.: Power has now been fully restored after four and a half hours. Alectra repair crews beat their second estimated repair time by little over 90 minutes.

Power is out in hundreds of homes and businesses in Hamilton this evening, though crews are well on their way to finishing repairs.

Lights and air conditioners switched off from Mohawk Rd E to Rymal Rd and between Upper Paradise Rd to Upper James St in the city’s south around 3:50 this afternoon.

Some 2,600 homes and businesses lost power during the peak heat of the day, which reached 32 degrees. The city has spent the week in the grip of a major heat warning with the mercury climbing 40 degrees with humidity.

Alectra Energy crews quickly responded to the the outage. About a half hour after the first announcement, they had managed to bring down the number of affected homes to under 1,900.

At that time Alectra estimated they would have everyone back online by 6 p.m. Around 5 p.m. the company announced the outage was down to around 1,500 homes.

About 20 minutes later power had been restored to more than half of affected families leaving just over 1,000 customers remaining without ac.

Now past the initial estimated repair time, more than 600 customers. Crews remain hard at work and now estimate a repair time of 9 p.m. The outage is now mostly down to along Garth St south of Lincoln Alexander Pkwy.
