Shooting sends man to hospital with 'critical injuries' in Brampton: police

UPDATE: Police said in an update shortly after 11 a.m. that one youth is in custody and the lockdown and hold-and-secure orders had been lifted.

Police put partial lockdowns in place at four schools and shuttered another in Brampton after a knife or gun may have been seen on Monday morning.

The incident happened around 8:30 a.m. in the area of Williams Parkway and Bramalea Road when Peel Regional Police say students were fighting at a nearby school.

A weapon was reportedly seen during the altercation, with police saying it was a “possible gun or knife.”

No injuries have been reported but police have placed Chinguacousy Secondary School on lockdown as a precaution, while Judith Nyman Secondary School, Williams Parkway Sr. Public School, Jefferson Public School and St. John Bosco Catholic Elementary School have all been put on partial lockdowns, also known as hold-and-secure orders.

Police said residents and students could expect to see a police presence with officers on the scene while the investigation is underway.

Shortly after 11 a.m., police said one male youth had been taken into custody, and the lockdown and hold-and-secure orders had been lifted. Police did not say if any charges have been laid or are pending.

Hold-and-secure orders are used by police at schools as a precaution and are generally considered less serious than a full lockdown.
