Mats similar to the one here will be available at a Burlington beach.

It should be a little easier this summer for everyone in Burlington to head to the beach.

Portable mats will be installed at Beachway Park that will allow those with mobility issues to reach the waterfront.

As part of the Ontario government initiative that funds inclusivity programs, Burlington will receive $30,000 to install the mats which are portable and can be placed in different areas of the beach.

“This project will enable the City of Burlington to purchase and install portable beach mats to provide a barrier-free path of travel to the edge of Lake Ontario at Beachway Park,” reads a statement released by the Ontario Ministry of Seniors and Accessibility.

The portable mats have proven to be popular in other areas around North America where there are no permanent accessibility ramps for those who rely on wheelchairs, scooters or other mobility devices. The portability of the mats allows them to be moved around to suit the needs of the user and for the beach area that is used.

“The Inclusive Community Grants Program helps ensure local governments and community organizations consider Ontarians of all ages and abilities at every stage of community planning and development,” the government statement reads.
