Port Colborne ward recount being done on Halloween day

The two incumbent councillors that literally tied for second place in Port Colborne’s Ward 2 race on Monday night will be getting into the Halloween spirit early in the day.
One is in for a trick. The other, a treat.
After four years of being ward-mates, incumbent councillors Eric Beauregard and Angie Desmarais now find themselves in the position where only one of them will move forward for the next four years.
After newcomer Tim Hoyle topped the Ward 2 polls with 352 votes, that left Beauregard and Desmarais deadlocked for second with 342 votes apiece.
So on October 31, there will be a private recount of the Ward 2 votes at 1 p.m. at Port Colborne City Hall with only the two candidates, their lawyers and scrutineers in attendance.
Should they, in fact, tie a second time, it will then be left up to the city’s Acting Clerk Nicole Rubli to break the tie. While there are no hard-and-fast rules about the procedure, the most common way is one of the oldest – put the two names in a hat and draw the winner.
