Brampton’s population grew by almost 90,000 in one year and is closer to reaching the one million mark than previously expected.
New data shows that Brampton’s population went from 656,480 in 2021 to 745,557 in 2022, an increase of 89,077 or 13.6 per cent in just one year.
According to the information contained in Brampton’s 2025 budget document, the city is expected to reach a population of one million by 2051 but online data suggests that may happen much sooner.
The independent website World Population Review, which analyzes population trends, says Brampton’s population sits at 826,998 as of 2024 and with the current growth rate the city should reach one million well before estimates.
Already Brampton is rated as the fastest-growing large city in Canada and its population is now the ninth highest in Canada.
Last year, Mayor Patrick Brown indicated Brampton is growing at a rate four times faster than Canada, and five times that of Ontario. He said the city is seeing “explosive growth” compared to similar municipalities.
Even Premier Doug Ford has agreed saying he expects Brampton will eventually eclipse Mississauga and then Ottawa’s population of more than one million which would make it the second-largest city in Ontario next to Toronto (it is currently the fourth largest).
Other data released by Brampton in its budget document is a breakdown of other demographics.
- The population is comprised of residents from 250 different cultures
- There are 171 different languages spoken
- 52.9 per cent of residents were born outside of Canada
- The average age of residents is 37.5
