People visiting a popular conservation area in south Mississauga are going to notice some improvements in the next couple of months.

Rattray Marsh Conservation Area and the portion of the Waterfront Trail that runs through it are getting a mini-facelift in order to make the natural area more accessible to the public and safer to use.

Credit Valley Conservation (CVC), the conservation authority responsible for protecting, restoring and managing the natural area within the Credit River watershed, says construction along the trail at Rattray Marsh is already underway and will continue into May.

CVC says the boardwalk is being renovated and realigned to “improve accessibility and avoid conflicts with existing buried infrastructure.”

Access to Rattray Marsh will remain open while work is being done, but some short-term closures may be required, according to CVC.

“We will also be removing several hazard ash trees along the trail corridor to accommodate the new trail construction and will replace the trees at a 1:10 ratio within the conservation area,” CVC officials said in a statement posted to their Twitter site.

Work on the nearby Silver Birch Trail, meanwhile, has been put on hold temporarily, the conservation authority says. That trail remains open to the public.

CVC officials remind people that trails through the Rattray Marsh area may be icy and that wearing cleats might be a good idea.

Additionally, they caution that ice skating is not permitted on the marsh, and that visitors are to stay off any ice that forms.
