Burlington’s popular former mayor, Walter Mulkewich, died last week at the age of 81.

Raised on a farm in Waterford, Mulkewich was known for his hard-working mentality as a Burlington councillor in 1976 and two-term mayor from 1991-1997.

Current Mayor Marianne Meed Ward described him as “a fierce advocate for justice and a tireless community booster for his Aldershot neighbourhood and entire city. Our thoughts go out to his family and the many residents of our community whom he inspired during his time with us.”

Flags at city hall were flown at half-mast in his honour.

A former high school teacher and graduate of McMaster University, Mulkewich leaves behind three daughters and six grandchildren.

Following the death of his wife Beverley and retirement from city politics, Mulkewich volunteered with many different organizations , including the Hamilton Port Authority and the Burlington Performing Art Centre in his retirement years. He was also very active in the Burlington Baptist Church.
