Hamilton Police are on the scene of a fatal collision in the east end of the city which has closed several roads in the area on Wednesday (Sept. 29).

According to a police Tweet issued shortly before noon, officers were conducting an investigation in the area of Gage Street S and Main Street E.

Reports suggest that a car that was under investigation by police was involved in a serious collision. Around 3:35 p.m., the Special Investigation Unit (SIU), which is Ontario’s police watchdog, announced it was invoking its mandate because a woman died from her injuries after being in a car that was struck.. The SIU conducts investigations into police activity where someone has been seriously injured, alleges sexual assault or has died.

The SIU stated that preliminary information suggests the following:

  • At approximately 9 a.m., Hamilton Police Service officers responded to a 911 call for a two-vehicle collision in the area of King Street East and Gage Avenue South.
  • The male driver of one of the vehicles involved in the collision fled. Officers in two cruisers located the vehicle.
  • The driver fled. A short time later, the same driver was involved in a collision with another vehicle at Balsam Avenue and Maplewood Avenue. The driver fled on foot.
  • A woman in the other vehicle was taken to hospital where she died.

Four investigators and one forensic investigator have been assigned to the case.

The SIU is urging anyone who may have information about this investigation to contact the lead investigator at 1-800-787-8529.

The unit is also urging anyone who may have any video evidence related to this incident to upload that video through the SIU website.
