Police watchdog investigating fatal officer-involved shooting

MARKHAM, Ont. — Ontario’s police watchdog has been called in to investigate a fatal officer-involved shooting Friday night in Markham, Ont.

York Regional Police say they notified the Special Investigations Unit after the incident occurred around 9:15 p.m. at a shopping plaza on Fairburn Drive near Highway 7.

They say an officer was sent to the plaza to investigate a suspicious person.

Police say a male suspect was subsequently shot during an interaction with the officer and was later pronounced dead in hospital.

They say a woman was also arrested at the scene for firearms related offences.

Investigators are urging witnesses or anyone one who may have video surveillance or dashcam footage of the incident to contact them.
