Durham Police used a spike belt to send an armed carjacker and his stolen car crashing into a golf course in Whitby yesterday morning.

Police were called to the Henry Street and Dundas Street area in downtown Whitby just before 8:30 a.m. after reports of a man armed with a gun attempting to get into vehicles.

Investigators from Central West Division arrived on the scene just as the man forced a 25 year-old woman from her car and drove away southbound on Henry Street with the stolen car.

The woman sustained minor injuries.

Police pursued the suspect onto Bayly Street and after observing him driving in a dangerous manner set up the spike belt near Lakeridge Road. The suspect lost control of the vehicle, exiting the roadway and ending up on a green at an Ajax golf course.

Officers were able to take him into custody after a brief foot pursuit without incident.
