Police taser knife and hammer-wielding suspect in Oshawa

Suspect with knife, hammer, tasered in Oshawa

A suspect had to be tasered by police after threatening a motorist with a knife and then brandishing the knife and a hammer in a brief confrontation with police in Oshawa Sunday evening.

Durham Police responded to an armed person call just after 6 p.m. Sunday after a motorist returned to his parked car at Bruce Street and Court Street just south of downtown and found the suspect inside. The victim confronted the suspect, who pulled out a knife before fleeing.

Officers arrived in the area a short time later and found the suspect and after a brief foot pursuit, the suspect made threats toward officers with the knife and a hammer. Police deployed a Conducted Energy Weapon to take the suspect into custody.

The victim did not suffer any physical injuries.

Jonathan Joseph Cyr, 18, of no fixed address, is charged with assault with a weapon, possession of a dangerous weapon, possession of stolen property, possession of break-in instruments, mischief, obstruction of a police officer and theft.

He was held for a bail hearing.
