Police seize handgun and bulletproof vest in alleged Brampton opium busts

Two women and two men from Brampton are facing charges after police say they found opium, an illegal handgun and body armour during searches this week.

On Tuesday (March 8), Peel Regional Police say investigators served three search warrants at residences and one vehicle in the areas of Sandalwood Parkway and Airport Road, and Bramalea Road and East Drive in Brampton.

Police say officers seized a Smith and Wesson 40 calibre handgun along with ammunition, a bulletproof vest, Opium, Doda and dried Poppy Pods.

Officers also allegedly found Canadian and Indian currency, Unknown adhesive patches, Ammunition and a BB gun.

Four people have been arrested and charged according to police.

Sukhinder Minhas, a 56-year-old man from Brampton, is charged with:

  • Possession of a Firearm
  • Possession of a Prohibited Device
  • Possession of an Unloaded Firearm with Ammunition Readily Available
  • Possession of Firearm Knowing Serial Number Removed
  • Possess for the Purpose of Trafficking
  • Possession of a Controlled Substance

Balvinder Minhas, a 59-year-old woman from Brampton, is charged with:

  • Possession of a Firearm
  • Possession of a Prohibited Device
  • Possession of an Unloaded Firearm with Ammunition Readily Available
  • Possession of Firearm Knowing Serial Number Removed
  • Possession of a Controlled Substance

Harsimran Minhas, a 29-year-old man from Brampton, is charged with:

  • Possession of a Firearm
  • Possession of a Prohibited Device
  • Possession of an Unloaded Firearm with Ammunition Readily Available
  • Possession of Firearm Knowing Serial Number Removed

Ravina Minhas, a 33-year-old woman from Brampton, is charged with:

  • Possession of a Firearm
  • Possession of a Prohibited Device
  • Possession of an Unloaded Firearm with Ammunition Readily Available
  • Possession of a Firearm Knowing Serial Number Removed

“This is another example of the hard work, dedication and perseverance by our officers which unfortunately also demonstrates the correlation between drug trafficking and firearm offences in our communities,” Peel Regional Police Deputy Chief Marc Andrews said in a release.

The accused were all held for a bail hearing and attended the Ontario Court of Justice in Brampton on Wednesday.
