A black bear sighting has been reported in Halton Hills today (Dec. 5).

Around 1:30 p.m., officers responded to a report of a small black bear located in a wooded area south of the intersection of Regional Road 25 and Number 32 Side Road in Acton.

Police say the black bear was not acting in an aggressive manner, and was last seen wandering into the bush south of Davidson Drive.

“Although rare, it is not uncommon to have bear sightings in rural wooded areas,” said police. “If you spot a bear, do not approach it, remain calm, and don’t panic.  Bears who encounter people are normally stressed and will likely flee.”

The Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR) has been contacted and is aware of the black bear sighting.

Residents who see a bear are advised to keep their pets inside, and call 911 if a black bear poses an immediate threat.
