Police issue warning after child bit by coyote

Durham Regional Police has issued a public safety advisory after a child was bitten by a coyote in Whitby Monday.

Police said several incidents have been reported and are asking residents to be “vigilant and proactive” when encountering coyotes.

Community members, including pedestrians and pet owners, are urged to exercise caution when using public spaces, particularly when accompanied by small children or pets. “Coyotes are most active during the early morning and evening hours and may become aggressive if they feel threatened.”

Whitby Mayor Elizabeth Roy expressed her concerns for the child – a toddler who is stable condition in hospital – and said she is adding coyote safety to the agenda for the next community roundtable later this summer.

Roy launched the roundtable meetings with staff, police, school boards and other local partners when she was elected four years ago.

As well, an online reporting tool and public coyote sightings dashboard are “well used” by residents and provide valuable information that helps town staff monitor activity and respond appropriately, she added.

Town staff also provided a coyote safety session at a Whitby school last month after a coyote came onto school property.

“There’s always room to build on what’s working,” Roy said. “The upcoming roundtable will provide an opportunity to collaborate on additional measures, including the potential for increased education sessions for schools and community members.”

Durham Police said if a coyote is seen exhibiting “aggressive or unusual behaviour” to report it to local authorities. “Awareness and prevention are key to reducing negative encounters. If there is an immediate threat to public safety, call 9-1-1.”
