A tips line has been established to help in the investigation into a Brantford residential school where police say “criminality is suspected.”

The Six Nations Police Service (SNPS), Brantford Police Service and Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Criminal Investigation Branch (CIB) established a toll-free tip line in the hopes of hearing from survivors of the Mohawk Institute.

The Anglican-church-run and Canadian government-funded institution was one of the longest-running residential schools in the country as it operated from the mid-to-late 1800s until the summer of 1970.

Anywhere between 90 and 200 children were forced to attend the school each year and these children were taken from Six Nations and many other First Nations.

An estimated 150,000 Indigenous children were forced to attend Canada’s residential schools.

A ground search of the more than 500 acres of property on which the Mohawk Institute sits commenced in the Fall of 2021 in the wake of the discovery of hundreds of unmarked graves on the land of former residential schools across Canada.

Investigators looking into the Mohawk institute said they would like to talk to survivors who may have witnessed any criminal acts that could have led to the deaths of children at the facility and they are interested in information about any missing children that attended the school.

Anyone with information is asked to call the toll-free tip line at 1-888-523-8587.

The tip line also includes information on 911 and crisis supports that are available, including the toll-free “Hope for Wellness Help Line” at 1-855-242-3310.
