Motorists and residents in Burlington and Oakville can expect to see illumination over Lake Ontario tonight as the search continues for a missing boater.

Halton Regional Police Service sent an advisory shortly after 7 p.m. on Friday (Aug. 27). Rescue flares are being used to light up the area near the mouth of 16 Mile Creek and Lake Ontario where an unoccupied boat was found on Thursday night.

Robert Wyles, an 80-year-old man from Durham Region who owns the boat, has not been seen since setting sail around 12:30 p.m. on Thursday.

The adrift boat was spotted around 6 p.m., around the time a thunderstorm system moved over the northwest end of Lake Ontario.

A coast guard unit that is based at CFB Trention is also part of the coordinated search effort.
