The body of a 17-old-man was found last night (June 27) by the Niagara Region Marine Unit after a four-and-half hour search in Niagara’s Falls Chippawa River.

Niagara Regional Police, EMS and the Niagara Falls Fire Department were called to the scene in the area of Bridgewater Street and Dock Street just after 4 pm when a male swimmer was reported missing.

The police said that while swimming, “the male dropped below the water surface and did not resurface.”

When the Marine Unit was called, divers searched from 4:25 pm until they eventually found him at 8:52 pm. The swimmer was pronounced dead at the scene.

An investigation into the drowning is ongoing but police say foul play is not suspected and that “out of respect of next of kin, the identity of the male is not being released.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Niagara Regional Police Service at 905-688-4111, ext 1002200.
