A Durham Region Police Constable-in-Training killed on his way to the Ontario Police College on July 7 was remembered at his funeral in Oshawa today for his “kindness, compassion, dedication, and unwavering commitment to others.”
Tyrone Magbitang’s family and friends and police officers from around Ontario came together to honour and remember him for “the profound impact” he had on so many, said Durham Police Chief Peter Moreira.
“While his life was far too short, his legacy will live on through the lives he touched, the friendships he built, and the example he set,” Moreira said, while thanking Magbitang’s family and policing partners with the OPP and in Toronto and London.
“To Tyrone’s family and loved ones, please know that you remain in our thoughts and that the DRPS family stands with you today and in the days ahead. Tyrone will always be remembered as one of our own. “
Moreira also asked that the other Constable-in Training (who has not been identified) who was critically injured in the collision that killed his partner remain in the thoughts of residents.
“We remain hopeful about their continued recovery.”
Magbitang, 27, was involved in a motor vehicle collision with a transport truck while travelling to the police college last week. He was declared dead at the scene.
The other officer-in-training in the vehicle was critically injured in the crash.
Magbitang joined the Durham Regional Police Service as a Special Constable in May 2023 and in April of this year he took the next step toward achieving his “lifelong dream” of becoming a police officer when he was selected as a police constable recruit, Moreira said.
“The kindness shown by our community, policing partners, and all those who have reached out has been a source of comfort during this difficult time,” Moreira said. “Tyrone’s kindness, dedication, and positive spirit touched many lives, and your messages will mean a great deal to his family, friends, classmates, and colleagues.”
