Police caution escaped white wolf roaming in Port Colborne area

Niagara Police are warning the public in Port Colborne that a white Arctic wolf has escaped its enclosure and is currently roaming the area.

Yesterday (August 2) at 11 am, police were notified that the wolf is on the loose and are cautioning residents to keep a safe distance. The wolf had been rescued from a northern area of Ontario and was living in western Port Colborne.

She escaped from the Main Street West and Cement Road area of the city at roughly 9 am and numerous residents called police after spotting her.

Police are asking the public not to approach the wolf, if seen.  “Members of the public are strongly encouraged to not go looking for the wolf.  Forcing an interaction could cause a negative outcome for the human and the wolf.”

They added, “Pressuring the wolf could also cause it to run, making its capture more difficult.  The public in the area are being cautioned to be aware of their personal safety and that of their pets.”

The police said they are working closely with the City of Port Colborne and the Niagara Niagara Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) to capture the escaped animal.
