Baseball fever — more specifically, Blue Jays fever — will be in the air Tuesday night in Mississauga’s downtown core.

Hundreds of excited and likely nervous fans (if not more) are expected to gather outside in front of the big screens at Celebration Square to watch the Toronto Blue Jays battle the New York Yankees in Game 3 of the teams’ American League Division Series. First pitch is scheduled for just after 8 p.m.

The Blue Jays won the first two games in the best-of-five set — 10-1 and 13-7 — in Toronto and have travelled to New York City to go for the series sweep tonight in the Bronx.

At stake for the two division rivals is a berth in the American League Championship Series against either the Detroit Tigers or Seattle Mariners, who are deadlocked at one game apiece in the other AL division series heading into their Game 3 Tuesday afternoon.

Mississauga Mayor Carolyn Parrish said Celebration Square will be known Tuesday night as “The Birds’ Nest.”

She took to social media to encourage fans to come out to the square, writing in a post to X (formerly Twitter) the City of Mississauga’s events team “has secured the broadcast rights for the Blue Jays playoff games. Celebration Square will be renamed The Birds’ Nest October 7 at 8 p.m. Full screens will light up with action. Join me and hundreds of residents to cheer the Jays’ wipeout of the Yankees!”

While rain and possible thunderstorms are in the forecast for daytime on Tuesday, Environment and Climate Change Canada is calling for the wet weather to clear in time for the game.

The national weather agency forecasts overcast/mainly cloudy conditions in the evening and nighttime for Mississauga with a 10 per cent chance of rain.

Should the Blue Jays win Tuesday night, it would be their first playoff series victory in nearly a decade.

They made it to the American League Championship Series in both 2015 and 2016, before losing on both occasions.

If the Yankees win tonight, Game 4 will go Wednesday, also in New York. If a Game 5 is necessary, it’ll take place Friday back in Toronto.

Toronto sends former Cy Young Award winner Shane Bieber, 30, to the mound tonight. He was acquired from Cleveland at the trade deadline this season.

Carlos Rodon, a hard-throwing lefty, starts for New York and will attempt to prevent a Toronto series sweep.
