Planta restaurant chain closes all Toronto locations

A vegan restaurant chain with locations in Canada and the United States has now closed all its Canadian restaurants.

Planta has been well known in Toronto for its delicious vegan eats, with a location serving classic refined veggie fare and another focusing more on Asian-leaning cuisine like sushi.

Now, vegans in Canada will no longer be able to eat at Planta.

“Where it all began. Toronto is where PLANTA first came to life nearly ten years ago, and we’ll always be grateful to the community that helped shape this brand,” the restaurant posted on social media.

“Despite every effort to keep our doors open in Toronto, our Canadian restaurants reached a point where it was no longer financially feasible to operate. PLANTA continues to serve guests across our United States locations while we proudly expand our commitment to push the boundaries of plant-based hospitality. Thank you for being part of the journey.”

Due to the sudden closure of the restaurant in Canada, people had words on social media.

“Mixed feelings about closing if I am honest. Loved creative menu, atmosphere and service. Always 10/10. Disappointed with lack of respect and responsibility towards staff (4 days notice) and customers (no notice at all),” reads one comment.

“Choosing to throw down as collateral Toronto’s locations is a move that big money driven companies make. Planta started here and it was always busy. Busier than US locations, but labour and expenses are cheaper there. I will miss dearly the experience at Planta, great staff and amazing food, but I am not sad for big bosses who ‘had’ to close their business.”

“My 11 year old son and I are devastated. Planta Yorkville is one of the only restaurants he can safely eat at (he is anaphylactic to dairy, wheat, egg and sesame). The service is always amazing. My son is also on the autism spectrum and we reserve at off hours, where they always had his favorite table (at the back) prepared,” one person wrote in a heartfelt comment.

“Each time we would go they would write on the menu for us, which dishes he can have, which he cannot and which they can alter for him. They were so accommodating and caring to him. He literally cannot eat at many restaurants so it was special to visit Toronto with him every couple months and dine at Planta Yorkville. Please say a special thank you to Manager Elena, Grace, Chef Tina and all of your wonderful staff there that made our family, and everyone who visits, feel special. We will miss your delicious food and everyone dearly.”

Planta posted that they have closed in Canada this week.
