Planning starts for park next to new Burlington community centre

The old track and field will be lost at the redeveloped Robert Bateman Community Centre, but plans are underway to determine what will occupy the remaining greenspace.

Despite community opposition to the removal of the running track and football field, the City of Burlington decided earlier this year that more parking spaces are needed instead once the site at 5151 New Street is converted into a large community hub that will house a university campus.

Still, there is plenty of greenspace left at the site which will incorporate adjacent Frontenac Park into a redesigned area for community use.

A new online survey has been launched where members of the public can provide input on the future use of the area. The survey can be found at getinvolvedburlington.ca/bateman until the end of April.

As well, residents can also join an in-person session at Tansley Woods Community Centre (1996 Itabashi Way) on April 17 from 7 to 9 p.m. or an online visioning session on April 25 from 7 to 9 p.m. To register for a session, visit getinvolvedburlington.ca/bateman.

The primary question participants will be asked is, “How would you like to use the greenspace?”

Participants will be able to provide feedback on the redevelopment of this outdoor greenspace including essential paved pathway connections throughout the site to the adjacent school and new community centre entrance.

The information collected will be reviewed by the City to help determine what can and cannot be done in the space and create different concepts. Factors that will also determine concepts will be popularity, cost, noise/disruption to neighbours, regulations and technical feasibility.

Park features that cannot go into the greenspace include full-sized sport fields, sport field lighting, pickleball courts, basketball courts, a splash pad and an outdoor pool.

The cost for the City to buy the Bateman site and convert it into a community has been estimated at $100 million.

A City report shows that work on the site is on schedule and on budget with phase one of the project expected to open in the fall of 2025.
