Pickering’s Shawn Mendes, Oshawa’s Daniel Caesar nominated for Junos

Pickering pop superstar Shawn Mendes and Oshawa singer-songwriter Daniel Caesar will join the rest of Canada’s music glitterati at the Juno Awards in Edmonton March 13.
Mendes, already an eight-time winner, will try to add to his collection at Rogers Place when he brings his three nominations to the star-studded event. Mendes is nominated for two of the biggest prizes on the night, including Single of the Year – an award he won three years in a row between 2018-2020 – for When You’re Gone, as well as Artist of the Year, where he is a two-time winner.
Caesar, with music heavily influenced by gospel and soul, is up for Traditional R&B.Soul Recording of the Year for Please Do Not Lean, featuring frequent collaborator Badbadnotgood.
Caesar has been nominated three times previous for this award, winning in 2018 for his debut album, Freudian. Caesar is also a 2019 Grammy winner for Best R&B Performance for Best Part.

Mendes, who has a total of eight Junos in his collection, is also nominated for the Tiktok Juno Fan Choice Award against Avril Lavigne, Lauren Spencer-Smithy, Mackenzie Porter, Preston Pablo, Reve, Tate McRae, The Reklaws, Tyler Shaw and The Weeknd.
The Weeknd led all artists with a half dozen nominations this year, including artist of the year, single of the year, album of the year and songwriter of the year. Lavigne and McRae followed with five nods each.

Mendes, who cut short his 2022 world tour in support of his chart-topping latest album Wonder after just seven shows to concentrate on his mental health, is up against Lavigne, Spencer-Smith, The Weeknd and Michael Buble in the artist of the year category and The Weeknd (Sacrifice) Lavigne (Bite Me), McRae (She’s all I Wanna Be) and Pablo and Banx & Ranx (Flowers Need Rain).
George Seara, who worked on Mendes’ latest single, It’ll Be Okay, is also up for Recording Engineer of the Year, a prize won last year by Pickering’s Hill Kourkoutis – the first woman to win the award.
Caesar’s competition in the R&B Soul recording of the year category is Palisade by Jon Vinyl, All I Need by Safe, Last One (featuring Dylan Sinclair) by Savannah Ré and How To Make Love by The Honest Guy.
Hosted for the second year in a row by action hero, global star and Mississauga’s own Simu Lu, the 52nd annual Junos will be highlighted by a Canadian Music Hall of Fame induction ceremony for rock legends Nickelback, followed by a performance reflecting on their 20-plus year career in music.
There will also be live performances from Alexisonfire, Tenille Towns, Jessie Reyez and others.
