Cheyenne Rowe of Ajax battles for position against Argentina at the FIBA U18 Americas Wednesday

Canada and the USA finished atop their groups at the FIBA U18 Americas championship with convincing wins yesterday on day three of the tournament from Estadio Obras Sanitarias in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Canada finished the preliminary round 3-0 after trouncing the hosts 89-53 Wednesday with T’yana Todd leading all scorers with 17 points and Maria Dykstra adding a double-double with 13 points and 13 rebounds. Pickering’s Mary-Anna Asare scored 13 for Canada as well.

In the other group the Americans crushed El Salvador 106-31.

Canada will face El Salvador and the U.S. will play Mexico in the quarter-final games. The other matches will see Argentina take on Colombia and Puerto Rico take on Brazil.

Canada won their first two games handily, beating Mexico 68-40 and Brazil 80-38.

Isuneh Brady (USA) is the tournament’s leading scorer so far, averaging 17 points a game, just ahead of Todd at 16.0. Asare and Cheyenne Rowe of Ajax – both of whom are being relied on mostly for their defence – are averaging 5.0 and 3.3 PPG, respectively.

Barring a major upset the final, set for Sunday, should be USA vs Canada.
