The City of Pickering is updating its Tree Protection By-law to provide greater protection to more trees in the community.

The City’s existing by-law covers trees within “environmentally sensitive areas,” while the focus of the updated by-law will be to protect the tree canopy and urban forest – including trees on private properties – by expanding the scope of the tree protection area.

Pickering’s tree canopy and urban forest play an “important role” in adapting to climate change, providing shade and cooling the community, reducing the urban heat island effect, decreasing the volume of storm water run-off, improving air quality, sequestering carbo, and contributing to a “visually appealing place” to live, work, play and learn, City staff stated in a news release.

Residents are invited to learn more about the proposed by-law changes at a Public Information Centre on Wednesday, April 19 at the City Hall lobby from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Visit LetsTalkPickering.ca/Trees to learn more and complete the survey (deadline is April 30). Staff will report feedback back to Council for consideration.
